Though it cost a mere £30 ($48) to cobble together, the see-through black slip credited with helping Kate Middleton catch the eye of Prince William could now be worth thousands. The dress, which was modeled by Kate at the St Andrew's annual charity fashion show in 2002, is set to be auctioned off by Kerry Taylor Auctions on March 17th with live internet bidding provided by Artfact.

Designed in 2000 by Charlotte Todd – a fashion and textile design student at the University of the West of England the piece was part of a project titled "The Art of Seduction". Originally intended to be a skirt, Middleton modeled it as a strapless dress that revealed her black lace lingerie in front of an audience that included the young prince. With an estimate of £8000 - £10,000 ($13,000 - $16,000), some speculate that Todd’s catwalk-creation for the future Princess of Wales could sell for more than £100,000 ($160,000).

The Royally themed auction will also include two important gowns worn by HRH the Princess of Wales. A lovely pink chiffon dinner dress by Zandra Rhodes, which was worn by the late princess on an official visit to Japan in 1986, is expected to fetch between £30,000 and £40,000 ($48,000 - $65,000). While a white lace evening gown with a formal, elongated silhouette, designed by the late Catherine Walker for a state visit by Diana to France in 1988, is estimated to fetch £40,000-£60,000 ($65,000 - $97,000).

Fans of the Royal Family can follow all the action live on March 17th by visiting Artfact.com.
